These numbers are cause for alarm, since hygienists are key in detecting peri-implantitis, or inflammation and bone loss around a dental implant. Between 10 and 20 percent of implants show signs of peri-implantitis after 15 years, according to RDH Magazine. Left untreated, this often leads to implant failure.
A Problem of Outsourcing
Part of the issue seems to be familiarity. More than half of the registered dental hygienists surveyed said their practices only restored implants, but referred patients to specialized providers for surgery to place the implant. This means hygienists often have little exposure to the product they are responsible for monitoring.
With proper care, implants can last 25 years or more. But 40 percent of hygienists see fewer than 25 implants per year, so they may lack the exposure or time to help patients meet this ideal. Choosing a dental office that manages the entire implant process can be key to implant longevity.
