Orthodontist launches anti-bullying contest to promote kindness

Our Bright Spot shines on embracing kindness with a smile.

Orthodontist Jeremy Bateman knows better than anyone how important a smile can be.

“Confidence leads to greater self-esteem and more opportunities, more doors will open for you, and I think the other thing is how people feel about themselves,” Bateman said.

His practice, Bateman Orthodontics, started the “Embrace Kindness Project.”

The anti-bullying contest is for students K through 12.

“It’s actually super easy,” Bateman said. “We’re inviting everyone in the Rochester community to submit either a short essay or video sharing their experiences with bullying. They don’t have to be firsthand experiences, and also ideas on how to prevent it.”

Dr. Bateman hopes the exercise will help kids feel more comfortable with themselves

“If you ever have been bullied, you know you probably feel a little isolated, embarrassed, possibly ashamed. We want to give kids a low-risk way to share and to maybe become more confident in themselves,” he said.

The winner will receive a free comprehensive orthodontic treatment, allowing them to embrace kindness with a smile.

“If we can help give kids a confident smile they are not only going to be looked at differently but also feel better on the inside,” Bateman said.

Students can enter the contest through the end of this month.

Dr. Bateman is also offering scholarships for future medical professionals.
